NORTHERN TERRITORY / RankWire.AI / – During a training exercise at Mount Bundey on Monday, a military vehicle rollover resulted in the death of a 28-year-old Australian Army soldier, with five additional personnel sustaining injuries in the same incident. The Australian Defence Force confirmed the occurrence on Tuesday, stating that the soldier’s family had been informed. The accident took place at the Mount Bundey Training Area, situated approximately 100 kilometres south-east of Darwin. Defence urged the public to respect the privacy of the affected personnel and their families.

Northern Territory Police responded to the scene around 4:20 p.m. on October 5. CareFlight NT and St John Ambulance also arrived to assist. Emergency services evacuated two injured soldiers by helicopter to Royal Darwin Hospital at about 7:30 p.m. Meanwhile, three others were transported by aircraft at roughly 9:30 p.m. All five wounded soldiers continued to receive treatment on Tuesday. The medical evacuations from the remote military site were supported by local authorities in the Northern Territory.
Lieutenant General Susan Coyle, Chief of Army, stated that Defence has initiated an investigation into the fatal rollover. Military police secured the accident site, and a land accident investigation board will review the incident. Northern Territory Police Commissioner Martin Dole mentioned that police are assisting Defence and conducting investigations on behalf of the coroner. The cause of the crash has not yet been disclosed. Coyle added that investigators require time to determine the facts before the Army responds to their findings.
Initiation of Defence probe
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese expressed his condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of the fallen soldier. Deputy Prime Minister and Defence Minister Richard Marles also conveyed his sympathies, describing the loss as a tragic blow to the Army. Defence announced its support for the families impacted by the incident. Northern Territory Chief Minister Lia Finocchiaro also extended her condolences and acknowledged the emergency teams involved in transporting the injured soldiers from Mount Bundey to Royal Darwin Hospital.
Mount Bundey functions as a significant training site for the Australian Army, located southeast of Darwin. It is frequently used by Australian and allied forces for exercises, including live-fire drills. The recent death marks the second Australian Army training fatality in 2026, following the death of Warrant Officer Class Two Lachlan Muddle, a member of the Special Air Service Regiment, in May after a mid-air collision during parachute training at Jervis Bay. Another paratrooper involved in that incident survived with minor injuries.
Previous fatalities at Mount Bundey
The Mount Bundey Training Area was also the scene of a fatal incident during an Army exercise in 2017, when Private Jason Challis lost his life during a live-fire urban training operation at the base. A coronial inquest in the Northern Territory later investigated the circumstances surrounding his death. The Department of Defence subsequently pleaded guilty in Darwin Local Court for failing to meet workplace health and safety obligations. The 2026 rollover is a separate event and remains under investigation.
Beyond confirming the age and gender of the soldier killed in Monday’s rollover, Defence has not publicly identified him. The unit he belonged to or details of the training activity at the time have not been disclosed. The Australian Defence Force stated that further information will be provided as it becomes available. Police continue supporting the coronial inquiry, while the Army conducts its internal investigation. Authorities have not yet determined the reasons behind the vehicle rollover or what specific factors contributed to the fatal incident.
